About Me
I am a Consultant Ophthalmologist and Vitreo-Retinal Surgeon
in Sheffield, UK. My NHS practice is
based at Royal Hallamshire Hospital and private practice based at Claremont
Private Hospital. My areas of expertise
include cataract surgery (including complex cases), vitreo-retinal surgery
(including retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, vitreous
haemorrhage and floaters and diabetic eye disease) and general
ophthalmology.
I am the Vitreo-Retinal Lead and Clinical Governance Lead for Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Foundation.
I graduated in Medicine and Surgery from the University of
Malta in 2004. I moved to the UK
where I completed Ophthalmology specialist training in Scotland, before
undergoing specialized training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in Aberdeen, UK
(2012-13). I was appointed as a
Consultant in Aberdeen in 2014, after which I completed further high-volume Fellowship
training in Vitreo-Retinal Surgery in Sydney Eye Hospital, Australia (2015),
before being appointed as a Consultant in Sheffield in 2016. During
my career I have been awarded numerous prizes (see Awards Section). In 2011, I was awarded an
EU-funded Scholarship and completed a Masters of Science (MSc) post-graduate
degree in “Clinical Visual Science”, with Distinction.
I am an author and co-author of numerous articles in
peer-reviewed journals and have co-authored two book chapters.
As an Honorary Senior Lecturer for the University of
Sheffield, I teach ophthalmology to medical students in my clinics and theatres
at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital, and take part in undergraduate admission
interviews. I also teach ophthalmology
trainees in clinics and surgery, and train vitreo-retinal fellows. I am an Educational Supervisor to junior
ophthalmologists, as well as a previous Microsurgical Skills Trainer and current Examiner for the Royal
College of Ophthalmologists.

As an NHS consultant, I take part in regular audit, clinical
governance activity and annual appraisal as part of 5-yearly revalidation. I keep a detailed audit of all my cataract
and surgical retinal outcomes to ensure the highest standard of care for my
patients.
I completed the Cardiff University Bond Solon (CUBS) Expert Witness Certification and regularly work as an Expert Witness for Clinical Negligence, Breach of Duty and Causation Cases as well as Condition and Prognosis Reports. I work with the General Medical Council on Fitness to Practise cases.
